It was in the middle of December. My daugh­ter, who goes to the sixth. Grade of elemen­tary school said me that: “Daddy, we are dealing with occupation in the social sci· ences lesson. Our teacher needs 3 people from different occupation to give infor­mation about his occupation to the class. She told us to ask our fathers”. I said that I would like to come.
It was the mid of December. My daughter - go­ing to the 6th class of the Elementary school said me that: “Daddy, we are studying careers in the social science lesson. Our teacher needs 3 people from dif­ferent careers to discuss about their occupations in our class. She told us to ask our fathers.” I said, it wo­uld be my pleasure to come and attend the lesson.
Immediately, I started to make preparations.
Firstly, I have collected some information about how they study this issue in their lesson. I have noticed that their teacher had applied a questionnaire in the class and according to the results; she defined most popular careers for the class. I put myself into their situation. When I was 12, what did I dream to be? At those ages, my biggest dream was to be a pilot. So, I have decided to mention about this.
I decided to talk about, in human’s life; one of two most important decisions is the decision of occu­pation. The other one is to choose our spouse or life partner that I should also tell them …
I decided to prepare my speech in a way that they can often join to the speech. For the power point pre­sentation, I have prepared the title of the subject and short explanations, then, I gave it to my daughter. She created a file with great excitement by adding her creativity. Thus, my worries about thinking that, whether the presentation is suitable with its content and its image for their age or not has ended.
The presentation wiII take nearly 20 minutes and it includes the significance of -career choice, expla­nations about my career-being Industrial Engineer, and before it, a general overview about being an en­gineer, and the area that I have been working in-In­ternet and telecommunication have been ready. I was waiting for the presentation day with great excite­ment. I feel happier to hear from my daughter that; her classmates were waiting for my presentation in impatience.
When the presentation day has come, social sci­ences teacher and I made a small meeting about the program at the teacher’s room before the presentation. She mentioned that, my study on not only including my career also giving informati­on about the importance of the choice of career made her happy. We talked about that the careers chosen at those ages generally change in the future, but this informational speech would make contributions to their visions and this idea has given a great pleasure to us.
The presentation of introduction to careers has passed in an enjo­yable conversation atmosphere with the children’s willing contributi­ons. Firstly, it gave me hope that the children have realistic attitude for the future and they have known what they want, and also they were trying to expand their knowledge with clever questions they asked.
Simulation is a crucial term in Industrial Engineering. When I as­ked them whether they had heard about this term or not, I witnessed that most of them had knowledge about that. I was just thinking that, this was the only advantage of the play station games and I asked its meaning. One of them said: “Virtual Reality”. The term has no exp­lanation in the dictionary, but for that age, I think, it was the most su­itable answer. Does not it show us that, a generation who is this much creative can be very useful, if they get educated at the right hands?
In conclusion, all students in the classroom agreed that, there are two decisions that are most important in life. They mentioned that, one of these decisions-the choice of career has not only bordered with in­terest areas; it is also related with family and environment effect and also the effect of luck. There were some students that wish to be a fo­otball player but they believed that education is very important and al­so realized that good ostentation and fast running are not enough.
We should direct these brilliant teenagers through the right way.
They all deserve to be a part of contemporary civilization level that Atatiirk shows us …
