Effect of Communication on Young Population
31 12 2007
When Turkey succeeds turning such potential absolutely into kinetic, it will acquire the real advantage then. Homever you talked with in recent years, he/she would say that having young popuÂlation is an important advantage for TurÂkey. Is it really true? Of course, it is easily seen that young population is an undeniÂable advantage compared to the senescent European continent and its problems arising as a result of this. Unfortunately, this advantage still exists just as a poÂtential. When Turkey succeeds turning such potential absolutely into kinetic, it will acquire the real advanÂtage then.
Considered from abroad, perception of Turkey usually contains good components for a while. 56.1 million Population in 1985 came to 70, 2 million in 2004. More than %50 of these people is under 44. DiÂrect investment from America and European Union to Turkey has increased considerably. Stagnant ecoÂnomy after 2002 crisis started to go on a stable way. Per capita income rose to $ 5477 in 2007. However, the richest %20 part still has %50 of Turkey’s yearly income while the poorest %40 just earns the %16. Furthermore, crushing majority of boards and estabÂlishments are of the same opinion about the participaÂtion in European Union. According to TDiK data, our population will be 73.3 million in 2010. %82.6 of this will live in cities, and % 17.4 in rural areas. This proÂportion will climb up to %90 in the following 10 yeÂars. Here, this reality makes other realities appear. Demand of city youngsters for education has been increasing day by day.
However, Turkey is in third from the end in OECD countries’ ranking of education expenses of youngsters going to school. While average education level of adult population in these countries is 11.9 yeÂars, it is 9.6 years in Turkey. Actually, it changes betÂween 12 and 13.4 years in initial 17 countries of OECD. Primary education is an obligation in Turkey. So, real deficiency comes from upper education laÂyers. While the proportion of children going to schoÂol between 15 and 19 is %80.5 in OECD, it is just %39.8 in Turkey and Turkey is the last with this proportion. Considering university age, graduation proÂportion is three times of Turkey in OECD countries. This proportion is four in Holland, almost five in coÂuntries like Finland, Denmark, and New Zealand.
Today, 64 state universities, 30 foundation uniÂversities, and I Open University give education chanÂce to almost 2.4 million students. These universities accept almost 600,000 students each year. This also includes Open University having hundred thousands of students. On the other hand, almost 3.5 million stuÂdents are educated in high schools and 2 million stuÂdents including graduates of previous years take ass every year as an entrance to university. It is seen cleÂarly that this makes the real problem. Whereas we congratulate the high school graduation success of youngsters who are in their personal maturing age by conferring a diploma, we mention that they actually could be nothing by giving another certificate. It is written in that certificate that they did not pass the university exam. Cost of making youngsters experiÂence this despair very early has becoming heavier. While total budget of yaK for all universities is $2.7 billion, total ass expenses of students till that year in which they take ass exam are $8.4 billion. Also, despite the opportunity of getting the worth is very little. Education in abroad developed as artificial soÂlution to this dilemma causes waste of resources, beÂcause Turkey is the seventh country in sending the most university students to abroad.
Superposing all of those; the thing that will be doÂne is materialized when the vision that Turkey deveÂloped is taken into consideration that Turkey is not only uses Information and Communication TechnoÂlogies but also provides them. Turkish youngsters eliÂgible to technology and innovations should benefit from advantages of technologies at highest levels. Training and education programs should be revised and restructured immediately to educate trained men for software sector which is at minimum in requireÂments like hardware, and laboratory in every part of the country. It should be encouraged that trained men establish their own small business or work in large establishments. Investments in Information and Communication Technologies should be given priÂority for letting trained men apply their knowledge and creating products of current age. Finally, special courses promising ass success should participate in this process and these should be turned into a format serving to students being educated at university level. Thus, waste of resources will be recovered, our yoÂungsters will have effectual global job, their educatiÂon level will rise and development of the country will have a rapid jump. Ireland, Israel, Korea gave the first examples of this in the world. Poland, Romania, Czech Republic followed these countries. Now, it is the turn of Jordan and Egypt. Turkey should determiÂne its turn and makes steps as soon as possible.
